How Do You Become a Project Manager?
Project Management seems to
be profession that grew of out of engineering.
When you ask most people what
is a project, their minds easily wander off to Engineering projects like Road,
Bridge, Building constructions, etc.
However, from this definition
of a project, according to the PMBOK Guide, “A project is a temporary
endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.”
It is evident that a project
extends beyond the engineering understanding and meaning.
Now looking at it from the
educational perspective, it is only recently that you have universities and
schools that offer courses in project management.
They have started developing
curriculum that enables people to graduate with first degree in Project
Management.
As at today in some
countries, you can only obtain Project Management at Masters Degree level in a
university.
So how do you become a
project manager?
Many people become project
managers by practice. They are either graduates of other professions who are
working in a position that requires them to supervise a project.
Continuously spending time in
such position gives the person the experience needed in managing projects thus
becoming project managers though on the job training.
Now in other to validate
their experiences and add more value to their knowledge, employees who have
been in project supervisory position for so long now seek to obtain
certification.
These certifications are
issued after some form of examination, by different institutions such as
Project Management Institute (PMI), US that gives the Project Management
Professional (PMP), The UK Government/AXELOS Ltd that gives PRoject IN
Controlled Environment (PRINCE2), etc.
It is now fashionable to have
people study and pass certification exams from these different examination’s
bodies.
In summary to become a
project manager here are possible road maps one can take
1.
Find a university that offer Project
Management at first degree level either online or onsite and enroll to study
project management
